Storyline
The film is based on the third battle of Panipat which took place on the 14 of January in 1761 between the Marathas and the King of Afghanistan, Ahmad Shah Abdali.
In the 18th century India, Ashutosh Gowariker’s ‘Panipat‘ begins with a peek into the valor of Sadashivrao Bhau (Arjun Kapoor), commander-in-chief of Maratha army he graciously defeats the Nizam of Udgir. On returning back to Pune after the victory, Nana Saheb Peshwa (Mohnish Bahl) hail him with applause. Till Peshwa’s wife Gopikabai (Padmini Kolhapure) begins to dislike Sadashivrao as she sees the recent as a threat to her son Vishwarao’s position as the next Peshwa. Till, Najib-Ud-Daula (Mantra), a Rohilla who was a Mughal serviceman forms alliance with Afghan chieftain Ahmad Shah Abdali (Sanjay Dutt).
He also convinces Shuja-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Oudh to join Abdali’s forces against the Marathas. As the Afghan ruler sets out to crush the Takht of Hindostan, the Maratha Peshwa chooses Sadashiv to crush Abdali’s soaring desire. What follows next is one of the largest and gruesome battles of the 18th century.
